Meaninglessness (Time Out review)

João Pombeiro
Galeria Paulo Amaro

Roundup #9: The Best Artists on artreview.com This Week

"Our guest critic, the independent curator, critic and regular reviewer for ArtReview magazine, Laura McLean-Ferris, makes another selection of outstanding artists on artreview.com. See her selection last week here .

(...)

Moving swiftly on, João Pombeiro is from Portugal, and studied at ESAD, in Caldas da Rainha, where he now lives and works. Continuing with the theme of that which refuses to die, we find his work peppered with the kinds of 'branding' styles that we have come to expect from artist like Damien Hirst or Daniel Buren, which now come back to rest on everyday domestic objects. The stripes on this chair certainly look like the work of the latter.

João Pombeiro, Chair, 1998

And this first aid kit the kind of motif used by the former...

João Pombeiro, 1st Aid Kit, 1999

This seems to be almost an exercise in 'putting back' these objects and symbols of the everyday into their original domestic context, and examining how they've been changed by this transformative process. Perhaps a clue is to be found in one of Pombeiro's text pieces: a circle of text which states: 'Every art definition follows a circular logic' - and perhaps this is the final stage in the circular process. Pombeiro has a solo exhibition (titled, unsurprisingly: Meaninglessness), which has just opened in Lisbon Galeria Paulo Amaro for those of you planning summer trips.

João Pombeiro, Landscape, 2000

This scrambling of references works like a virus, creating a humorous dialogue about meaning and meaninglessness in art. Does such pilfering strip the colour, shape or work of content, or is meaning and content created in the process? In Landscape for example, both the landscape itself and the history of landscape painting and photography gets scrambled together along with references to artists who used jigsaw puzzles in their work: Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Georges Perec are two that spring to mind."

Humor & Subversion in Video

Working with several mediums, João Pombeiro has been noticed by his videos, that usually subvert and deconstruct images and the way we percept them.

In the multiplicity of mediums that visual artists have been working with, video is the most meaningful one in the lasts forty years. The exhibition “Into the Light – the projected image in American art 1964-1977” that was presented in Belém Cultural Center in the last months of 2004, demonstrates the vitality of video, and the impact it had in the comprehension of art, especially American art.
The multiplicity is, in fact, a constant in the artists that come out from schools, all over the country, getting them ready, and if they wish so, to explore their creative potentials through the medium that fits best to their personality or, simply, to the desired result.

Just this, would explain our choice for this edition, an artist that works with this medium – João Pombeiro, a 25 years old artist, that develops his daily work in the fields of painting, photography, web design, and sculpture, and have been calling the critics attention, especially with his videos. With an Art Degree at ESAD, in Caldas da Rainha, he has been participating in several festivals. In one of these festivals, Ovarvideo 02, he won the public’s award and the jury’s special prize with a video called “The Office”. This work is the result of the documentation of a multidisciplinary project, developed with Hugo Guerra, and absorbed the entire academic curriculum in a continuous “performance”, during a year. In this video, were already present some of the key concepts, that are applied to his work, namely, subversion and humor.

The press release of his latest, and first, individual exhibition at 24b Gallery, in November / December of 2004, refers precisely this aspect of his work - «When observing the work of this author, easily we notice the constant use of methods based on irony, appropriation, sarcasm, citation and over all deconstruction and subversion. This subversion, not only contemplates everyday objects and experiences, but also any other aspect of the deepening of the microcosms of our being. »

The video “Schizo” also presented in this exhibition uses several of these ideas. In a Famous scene of Hitchcock´s movie “North by Northwest”, Cary Grant, in a desert landscape, runs away from a plane that is trying to kill him. In this work, João erased the image of the plane, leaving only the main character in an even more intense, scene than the original movie, because we don’t know what is the origin of the threat, which his posture suggests. It’s even more intense, or even schizophrenic, if we don’t know the original scene, because we only see a man running from nothing, approaching the nonsense in a comic scene.

Made in 2002, this video was already presented in several places in Portugal and Europe, like in the exhibition “Portugal – 30 artists under 40” in Oslo, curated by Pedro Portugal, with the initiative of the Republic’s President Office. It can be seen until April 3rd, in Coimbra at the Visual Arts Center, in the “Project Room” space, curated by Miguel Amado.

Quoting once again the text written for his exhibition at 24b Gallery - «Another fundamental characteristic of his work is the never ending questioning of the artist’s role, of the art’s definitions, the concept of exhibition and the way that artistic context works, without ever supplying a convincing answer or an alternative in which he really believes.» This characteristic is the most visible in “The Office”, since this “office” had become a “services center”; its artistic creation also offers services that an office implies, associated to the production of artistic contents.

A way of humor that has been disappearing from Portuguese art and that João Pombeiro assumes as one of the most concrete ways of reaching the public. To him, art has to focus on simple things, in a way it can become meaningful to everyone. He doesn’t like the works that are camouflaged under the concepts, and in is perspective, his works are only finished when they are seen. The act of showing is very important to him, since the public’s reaction completes his work, and many times helps to develop them. The video “Park” is one of his most interesting works. Ina a continuous rotating take, the camera captures the same human figure in different places of a park, revealing a capacity of omnipresence, that the imperfection and amateurism of video documentation, can’t explain what technique was used to achieve this effect.

Once more, subversion is a constant reference – it can be the subversion of the usual video documentation, of the original material, or the subversion of our perception, that goes around the ways of perception that we are used to.

This video leaves no one indifferent, its senseless time/space relation, associated with the rudeness of the technique, creates doubt and laughter.

João Pombeiro has in hands, the preparation of several videos, that he pretends to present in a near future, from which he highlights “International Intrigue”, a confusing dialogue about an escape, that João transformed, by changing the languages of the dialog, creating a new dialog between the four characters , which one speaking his own language.

Commercially speaking, video still is a area with few interested portuguese buyers , even though there are already some collectors that include this medium in their archives, the tendency will increase, based on the natural approach to the international reality. João´s videos are sold in 24b Gallery between 2.000€ and 2.500€.

The world of João Pombeiro is built with different postures, from which video its just another one, but it reflects specially the strength and personality of that world. Humor defines his attitude before art, reflected in one of his presentations: “João Pombeiro is a cynic, in the Hellenic sense of the term, who believes in drawing as a mental process, and makes art with a capital H, and the only thing that he desires is that no one blocks his sun”.

***

Project Room - C.A.V.

João Pombeiro (Leiria, 1979) studied Fine Arts at ESTGAD School, in Caldas da Rainha. His appearances in exhibitions have been few up to now. However, his production already shows signs of a maturity expressing an authorial mark. Proof of this is his recent exhibition held at 24b Gallery, in Oeiras, as well as his participation in the exhibition “Portugal: 30 artists under 40”, at Sternesen Museum, in Oslo. Thus, within the scope of its Project Room programme, the CAV is presenting a video of his, Schizo (2001-2002), contributing towards the divulging of his work and its respective greater critical, institutional and public recognition.

João Pombeiro´s practice encompasses several different media, raging from painting to sculptural interventions and including video and web design. However, whatever the mean of expression used, one can note a constancy of problematics that arise from an analysis of the scopic regime of mass culture that characterizes contemporary society, carried out through the recycling of the tendencies and genres of post-war fine arts, among which visual poetry and pop figuration stand out. In fact, the artist’s creative process rests on two strategies based on an awareness of the excess of images defining today’s everyday life: on the one hand, there is the appropriation of symbolic elements populating the western imaginary, whether these are films, advertising brands or others; on the other hand, there is the transformation of the materials appropriated to a logical of irony, which not only subverts its original principles but also converts them into objects with other meanings.

I’m waiting for my man (with $34 in my hand) (2000) and Untitled (2004) are two works exemplify João Pombeiro´s activity. The first is a wall sculpture that consists of the superimposing of thirty-four small canvas painted serygraph6y techniques and representing a one dollar bill. The second is a painting in witch there is a white canvas from which emerges a phrase painted in a black in a mirror effect, “ART IS A MIRROR THAT NEVER LIES”. In both cases one is faced with linguistic signs that not only  state but also decode power and the ideologies that support it into two systems of society, political sphere and the art world.

Schizo synthesizes João Pombeiro´s conceptual device, as the artist, with this piece, on the one hand reflects about the meaning of memory in the construction of collective identity and its anchoring within a popular-based overall imagery and, on the other hand, examines the specific mechanisms of video as a medium and its relationship with the tradition of cinema. This takes place trough the reviewing of a famous scene from the movie North by Northwest, by Alfred Hitchcock, which consists of the eliminating of the plane that chases the main character in the middle of a barren landscape, of the reediting of some shots and the introducing of a new soundtrack. There is thus the provoking of a sensation of strangeness on the part of the viewer in the sense that he recognizes the actor playing the part, Cary Grant, as well as the setting, but feels that he is subtracted  from something which gives meaning to what he is seeing, whether or not he is familiar with the scene, given that he now does not know the reason for the man’s behavior, as he is running away from nothing.

I´m waiting for my man (with $34 dollars in my hand) (2000) e S/título (2004) são dois trabalhos que exemplificam a actividade de João Pombeiro. IS MIRROR THAT NEVER LIES».

Introspective Exhibition 1997-2004 - Press Release

Art isn´t for everyone
Art isn't for everybody.

The work of  João Pombeiro is based essentially on one or two Duchampian presumptions, on a few postmodernist avant-garde practices and on the constant denial of a clearly existing poetics, articulated by logics which are parallel to the ones used in common practices.

When observing the work of this author, easily we notice the constant use of methods based on irony, appropriation, sarcasm, citation and over all deconstruction and subversion. This subversion, not only contemplates everyday objects and experiences, but also any other aspect of the deepening of the microcosms of our being.

Another fundamental characteristic of his work is the never ending questioning of the artist’s role, of the art’s definitions, the concept of exhibition and the way that artistic context works, without ever supplying a convincing answer or an alternative in which he really believes.

Thus, we are sent to an deliberately obsessive, self-centered and self-contradictory universe , in which the choice and use of the medium – which can go from painting to video, passing by sculpture, photography, installations, or even design – assumes a big role in the denunciation of this universe.

João Pombeiro is a cynic, in the Hellenic sense of the term, who believes in drawing as a mental process, and makes art with a capital H, and the only thing that he desires is that no one blocks his sun.

***

"A Simple Home Video"

Manuel João Vieira, ex-“Ena Pá 2000” e “Irmão Catita”, besides being a  painter, is the author of a video wich is one of the works of the exhibition:  " Portugal: 30 artists under 40", yesterday inaugurated by Jorge Sampaio, and Queen Sonja, in the Sternesen Museum, the most important museum of Contemporary art in Oslo .

“My contribution is a simple home video, with images taken from the mix of people that was my campaign Vieira 2001. It´s called “Vieira.com” and it’s a sub product of a wider performance”, stated the artist, who’s in Oslo integrated in Jorge Sampaio´s official comities.
A video where Cary Grant, in movie “North by Northwest” by Alfred Hitchcock, throws himself into a crop to runaway from a plane, in the middle of a desert landscape, is also presented in the exhibition. João Pombeiro, the author of the video, just erased the plane from Hitchcock´s movie, making Cary Grant look like a crazy man who throws himself into the ground, once, again, and again.

Lots of irreverence and color characterizes this exhibition ´s selected works, which isn’t very consensual: there’s a rug, 2m by 2m made out of chewed pink bubble gum, by João Pedro Vale, portraits by Paulo Mendes and Eva Mota, a panel by Alice Geirinhas, telling the story of a Portuguese emigrant’s daughter in Paris, with lots of misspell words, and a religious cross made out of Legos.

The idea of making an exhibition like this is to project Portuguese contemporary art in Norway, where is not much known. Two Jorge Sampaio´s assistants chose the Sternesen Museum because of it’s a well positioned institution in the European art circuits, with connections with Documenta, in Kassel.

Last night, at the museum´s bar, Manuel João Vieira presented himself in a “performance” promoted by posters inspirited in “Tenório Tuna fish” commercials, “singing since1919”, in this case “singing since1970”.
