Humor & Subversion in Video

Working with several mediums, João Pombeiro has been noticed by his videos, that usually subvert and deconstruct images and the way we percept them.

In the multiplicity of mediums that visual artists have been working with, video is the most meaningful one in the lasts forty years. The exhibition “Into the Light – the projected image in American art 1964-1977” that was presented in Belém Cultural Center in the last months of 2004, demonstrates the vitality of video, and the impact it had in the comprehension of art, especially American art.
The multiplicity is, in fact, a constant in the artists that come out from schools, all over the country, getting them ready, and if they wish so, to explore their creative potentials through the medium that fits best to their personality or, simply, to the desired result.

Just this, would explain our choice for this edition, an artist that works with this medium – João Pombeiro, a 25 years old artist, that develops his daily work in the fields of painting, photography, web design, and sculpture, and have been calling the critics attention, especially with his videos. With an Art Degree at ESAD, in Caldas da Rainha, he has been participating in several festivals. In one of these festivals, Ovarvideo 02, he won the public’s award and the jury’s special prize with a video called “The Office”. This work is the result of the documentation of a multidisciplinary project, developed with Hugo Guerra, and absorbed the entire academic curriculum in a continuous “performance”, during a year. In this video, were already present some of the key concepts, that are applied to his work, namely, subversion and humor.

The press release of his latest, and first, individual exhibition at 24b Gallery, in November / December of 2004, refers precisely this aspect of his work - «When observing the work of this author, easily we notice the constant use of methods based on irony, appropriation, sarcasm, citation and over all deconstruction and subversion. This subversion, not only contemplates everyday objects and experiences, but also any other aspect of the deepening of the microcosms of our being. »

The video “Schizo” also presented in this exhibition uses several of these ideas. In a Famous scene of Hitchcock´s movie “North by Northwest”, Cary Grant, in a desert landscape, runs away from a plane that is trying to kill him. In this work, João erased the image of the plane, leaving only the main character in an even more intense, scene than the original movie, because we don’t know what is the origin of the threat, which his posture suggests. It’s even more intense, or even schizophrenic, if we don’t know the original scene, because we only see a man running from nothing, approaching the nonsense in a comic scene.

Made in 2002, this video was already presented in several places in Portugal and Europe, like in the exhibition “Portugal – 30 artists under 40” in Oslo, curated by Pedro Portugal, with the initiative of the Republic’s President Office. It can be seen until April 3rd, in Coimbra at the Visual Arts Center, in the “Project Room” space, curated by Miguel Amado.

Quoting once again the text written for his exhibition at 24b Gallery - «Another fundamental characteristic of his work is the never ending questioning of the artist’s role, of the art’s definitions, the concept of exhibition and the way that artistic context works, without ever supplying a convincing answer or an alternative in which he really believes.» This characteristic is the most visible in “The Office”, since this “office” had become a “services center”; its artistic creation also offers services that an office implies, associated to the production of artistic contents.

A way of humor that has been disappearing from Portuguese art and that João Pombeiro assumes as one of the most concrete ways of reaching the public. To him, art has to focus on simple things, in a way it can become meaningful to everyone. He doesn’t like the works that are camouflaged under the concepts, and in is perspective, his works are only finished when they are seen. The act of showing is very important to him, since the public’s reaction completes his work, and many times helps to develop them. The video “Park” is one of his most interesting works. Ina a continuous rotating take, the camera captures the same human figure in different places of a park, revealing a capacity of omnipresence, that the imperfection and amateurism of video documentation, can’t explain what technique was used to achieve this effect.

Once more, subversion is a constant reference – it can be the subversion of the usual video documentation, of the original material, or the subversion of our perception, that goes around the ways of perception that we are used to.

This video leaves no one indifferent, its senseless time/space relation, associated with the rudeness of the technique, creates doubt and laughter.

João Pombeiro has in hands, the preparation of several videos, that he pretends to present in a near future, from which he highlights “International Intrigue”, a confusing dialogue about an escape, that João transformed, by changing the languages of the dialog, creating a new dialog between the four characters , which one speaking his own language.

Commercially speaking, video still is a area with few interested portuguese buyers , even though there are already some collectors that include this medium in their archives, the tendency will increase, based on the natural approach to the international reality. João´s videos are sold in 24b Gallery between 2.000€ and 2.500€.

The world of João Pombeiro is built with different postures, from which video its just another one, but it reflects specially the strength and personality of that world. Humor defines his attitude before art, reflected in one of his presentations: “João Pombeiro is a cynic, in the Hellenic sense of the term, who believes in drawing as a mental process, and makes art with a capital H, and the only thing that he desires is that no one blocks his sun”.
